Arithmetic procedures with integers and decimals

In this unit pupils develop their ability and efficacy with the four operations including more complicated and challenging calculations involving fractions, decimals and negative numbers. This leads into an exploration of the priority order of operations.

This is an attributed Oak National Academy lesson sequence, not a completed or academically approved DASKEREL course. Supporting transcripts may depend on video, images, practical equipment or teacher explanation. Follow each lesson’s supervision guidance. For religious education and RSHE, follow the school’s syllabus, policy and safeguarding procedures.

Prior knowledge

  • Perform all four operations with whole numbers
  • Add, subtract, multiply and divide decimals
  • Apply integer rules (positive/negative) to calculations

Source curriculum references

  • Use the 4 operations, including formal written methods, applied to integers, decimals, proper and improper fractions, and mixed numbers, all both positive and negative
  • Use conventional notation for the priority of operations, including brackets, powers, roots and reciprocals
  • Recognise and use relationships between operations including inverse operations
  • Use integer powers and associated real roots (square, cube and higher), recognise powers of 2, 3, 4, 5 and distinguish between exact representations of roots and their decimal approximations
  • Use a calculator and other technologies to calculate results accurately and then interpret them appropriately
