Graphical representations of linear equations
In this unti we develop understanding of linear relationships and explore the key features of a linear equation such as the gradient, intercept and determining an equation from coordinate pairs.
This is an attributed Oak National Academy lesson sequence, not a completed or academically approved DASKEREL course. Supporting transcripts may depend on video, images, practical equipment or teacher explanation. Follow each lesson’s supervision guidance. For religious education and RSHE, follow the school’s syllabus, policy and safeguarding procedures.
Prior knowledge
- Rearrange equations into y = mx + c form
- Use tables of values to plot lines
- Identify features of straight-line graphs
Source curriculum references
- Use standard units of mass, length, time, money and other measures, including with decimal quantities
- Model situations or procedures by translating them into algebraic expressions or formulae and by using graphs
- Recognise, sketch and produce graphs of linear and quadratic functions of 1 variable with appropriate scaling, using equations in x and y and the Cartesian plane
- Reduce a given linear equation in 2 variables to the standard form y = mx + c; calculate and interpret gradients and intercepts of graphs of such linear equations numerically, graphically and algebraically
- Use linear and quadratic graphs to estimate values of y for given values of x and vice versa and to find approximate solutions of simultaneous linear equations
- Relate the language of ratios and the associated calculations to the arithmetic of fractions and to linear functions
